There is good news coming out of General Motors these days even after its recent economic situations. General Motors has decided to release a up and coming concept car for late 2010 called the Chevy Volt. Originally the volt was to be cut from GMs normal operations as the bankruptcy and Economic crisis that came over them. But Vice chair man Bob Lutz, has vouched to stand behind the commitment of getting this new car out onto the production line. It is GMs only choice if they wish to start competing in the new global marketplace of new hybrids currently dominated by Honda and other manufactures

The Idea behind the car is the plug in electric feature that will either run off 120v connection or the stand 240v connection the only difference I the amount of time it will take to charge the core battery over night with 240v the rough estimate is about three hours with the 120v it is about 6-8 hours charge for the batteries.

The Production car for the Chevy volt is one of the first production vehicles to roll off Detroit’s production lines as totally electric. The hybrid cars use a combination of electric and gas to propel the car forward usually during in acceleration and stop and go traffic. Where the Chevy volt will actually use only electric for propelling itself forward. Because the Volt does have a gas tank the gas tank is actually only used for the generator that helps to recharge the batteries.

The car will require a special attachment to the plug which will connect to any household current and charge the lithium Ion batteries. But if on a longer trip the generator will kick in and allow the car to run while electric is returned to the batteries which will then shut off after it is full charged. It is estimated at this point to the Chevy Volt will achieve un heard of gas mileage as much as 240 miles per gallon with a single charge. If you are like most commuters within 40 miles of your work you will never need to fill up with gas since it is all electric use.

The Chevy Volt is estimated to come with a price tag of about 40,000 but nothing is set in stone until the current delivery date in Nov 2010. But, with subsidiaries and tax rebates of up to 7500 per car and reimbursed for the cost of the electrical and additional rebates the total cost of the car might be down in the 30,000 dollar rage which is much more affordable in the long run.

It is wonderful to see this General Motors attempting this new pioneering technology into the main stream instead of jumping head first into a already crowded hybrid technology market. The old innovative style of American car manufacturing has finally started to return to GM after years of neglect and it will only be for their better. By undertaking a project of this magnitude this will show the word that car innovation and balancing the environment is a apriority to the American public
