Have you ever received a call from a unknown number? It could be a 1800 number or a number from your local area. It is usually fine with me if they call my home phone but nothing is more annoying than getting odd numbers on my cell phone. Using Google or another popular search engine sometimes it’s as easy to locate the business or the location of a number by just typing it into the search box. They even provide contact numbers you can call to get off their list so that they will not call you any longer.

Some of them do charge outrageous fees but there are others that for 99 cents you can look up one number and get the information you are looking for.

With the internet it is widely available to have this information so you really never know who is looking for you. One good way is to contact the websites that have more personal information on there then you really care to have and ask them to please remove it. By law they have to adhere to your request to remove any information that you find unacceptable. They claim it is all a matter of public record and that they are just scrapping it from those records so you should also update any information that you do not want out there with your local city hall or governs office of official records.

This may not stop everyone from calling you but it will help in that it will make it a lot harder to find you especially if you really do not want to be found for whatever reason. If it is telemarketers that you are having issues with then use the online government do not call list. If you are on this list and telemarketers are calling you without your written permission they can get into a lot of trouble and heavy fines laid on them.

In this day and age it is getting harder and harder to maintain that privacy but you have some options like laid out above that you can do to protect yourself. Don’t give out any information including even a email address unless you are sure this person will not put you on any type of marketing list. Don’t use social media to display personal information that thieves can use to steal your identity. A lot of this may sound like common sense but people seem to lack that inherently as the technology changes.
